Hot Water System Maintenance Tips
As with any piece of equipment, hot water systems require maintenance to ensure safe and optimal performance. Maintenance of hot water services should be scheduled every five years for external units and every one to two years for internal units. Unit maintenance will help to avoid premature break down and identify and defects that require fixing.

The hot water servicing should include all of the following:

• Clean the pilot and burner.
• De-sludge the cylinder.
• Measure the water pressure.
• Measure the water temperature.
• Check and replace the anode if required.
• Check the pressure temperature relief valve and change if required.
The pressure temperature relief valve is a safety valve, and in
accordance with most manufacturers instructions must be changed
every five years to avoid damaging the unit.
• Check the thermocouple and change if required.
• Measure the gas pressure and adjust if required.

Naturally, not everyone will have the skills or feel comfortable performing these checks on a hot water unit. If you need assistance with your hot water maintenance, installation or repairs, contact O’Shea Plumbing today.
