To get the most out of your hot water and toilet systems we have put together the following Handy Plumbing Tips:

Tip #1
The hot water service pressure and temperature relief (PTR) valve lever should be pulled every six months. If the lever has not been pulled for two or more years or if the valve is more than five years old, then the valve should be replaced as per the manufacture's instructions and the lever pulled every six months to flush out the valve and the pressure and temperature relief drain pipe. The PTR drainpipe should not be extended with rubber hose.

Tip #2
It is essential for water pressures to be controlled for both hot and cold water.

The benefits are: Complies with tap, hot water unit (HWS or HWU) and Plumbing Industry Commission regulations and appliance specifications. Greatly extends the life of taps, the hot water service and pipe work. Helps reduce water hammer and water consumption.

Tip #3
When servicing taps, as well as the tap and jumper valve being changed with a good quality valve, it’s recommended to change the o-ring, the body washer and the spindle shaft, and that the bonnet be cleaned and replaced using the correct lubricant. The tap seat needs to be checked and if required re-seated.

Tip #4
Aqualoc tap valves are the best replacement valves on the market, other than the option of replacing the taps with the more expensive ceramic disc taps which generally require the water pressure to be controlled.

Aqualoc valves have a six-year manufactures warranty and a 20-year life expectancy. These valves will save you money because they use less water. An added bonus is that they require less effort to operate.

Tip #5
There are many products that should not be flushed down toilets. Flushing products like nappy wipes, sanitary products, fat and cooking oil down the toilet could cost you money. These substances are most likely to cause blockages and are definitely not good for the environment.

Cooking oil and fat should be left to solidify, wrapped in paper and put in the garbage.
