Dealing with water hammer
Water hammer is that annoying banging noise some people hear in their water pipes when taps, dishwashers or washing machines are turned on or off. It occurs due to a change in the velocity of the liquid in the pipe. And it doesn’t take a genius to guess that all that banging isn’t good for your pipes.

If you’re experiencing water hammer in your home, it’s important to take action as soon as possible. A burst pipe can cause damage to your taps and appliances, and the subsequent water damage to your home can be extensive. It’s the very definition of a plumbing emergency.

Water hammer can be fixed by a licensed plumber in the following ways:

• Installing water hammer arrestors
• Installing air chambers
• Installing water pressure control valves

Water hammer can occur in either copper, galvanised iron, or plastic pipes. However, the loud banging that is apparent in copper pipes is often hidden by plastic pipes. If you have plastic pipes within your home it is a good idea to get a plumber to assess the velocity and flow of your water every couple of years to avoid undetected cases of water hammer.
