Water hammer is that annoying banging noise some people hear in their water pipes when taps, dishwashers or washing machines are turned on or off. It occurs due to a change in the velocity of the liquid in the pipe. And it doesn’t take a genius to guess that all that banging isn’t good for your pipes.

Water hammer can occur in either copper, galvanised iron, or plastic pipes. However, the loud banging that is apparent in copper pipes is often hidden by plastic pipes. If you have plastic pipes within your home it is a good idea to get a plumber to assess the velocity and flow of your water every couple of years to avoid undetected cases of water hammer.
