Water filters

When your drinking water comes out of the tap tasting and smelling strange or looking cloudy you immediately know that it’s not safe to drink. But what about the contaminants in our water that we can’t sense?

A recent review by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that microplastics are present in our drinking water. Studies have found that people are ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic each week, which is approximately the weight of a credit card. There are concerns about the effects that microplastics are having on our health, but findings are limited at this stage, so the effects are still unknown.

To prevent the unknown effects of microplastic in our drinking water experts are suggesting the use of water filters. ‘“Opting for filters would aid in the removal of the microplastics. It would also aid in the removal of other pollutants like heavy metals and pathogens,” said Dr Paul Harvey, an environmental scientist and environmental chemist at Macquarie University’.
