What is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining is a way to repair damaged pipes without having to dig them out and replace them.

Instead, we insert a flexible liner coated in resin into the existing pipe. Once it's in position, we inflate the liner and allow it to harden, creating a strong, smooth new lining inside the old pipe.

The result is a sealed pipe that keeps wastewater flowing and helps prevent tree roots from finding their way back in. Depending on the system and conditions, relined pipes can have an expected service life of around 50 years.

It's also known as non destructive pipe repair, because we're working inside the existing pipe rather than excavating it. Your garden, paving and driveway can usually stay exactly where they are.

When is Pipe Relining the Right Option?

Not every damaged pipe needs to be replaced. In fact, many of the common drain problems we see around Melbourne can be fixed with pipe relining.

It's particularly useful for:

  • Cracked or broken sewer pipes that are leaking or causing recurring blockages
  • Tree root intrusion, where roots have worked their way through joints or cracks
  • Older clay and earthenware pipes that have started to deteriorate
  • Damaged pipe joints that have shifted or separated over time
  • Pipes under concrete, driveways or gardens where digging would cause unnecessary disruption

Of course, pipe relining isn't suitable for every situation. If a pipe has completely collapsed or is too badly damaged to support a liner, replacement may be the better option.

That's why we always recommend starting with a CCTV drain inspection. It allows us to see exactly what's going on and work out the best way to fix it.

How Does No Dig Pipe Relining Work?

One of the biggest advantages of no dig pipe relining is how straightforward the process can be. Many residential jobs can be completed in a single day, without the mess and disruption of traditional excavation.

Here's what happens:

  • 1We inspect the pipe. First, we use a CCTV drain camera to locate the damage and check the condition of the pipe. This tells us whether relining is suitable and which sections need attention.
  • 2We clean everything out. Before installing the liner, we clear away tree roots, debris and built-up scale using high-pressure jet blaster plumbing equipment. The pipe needs to be properly cleaned before we can install the liner.
  • 3We insert the liner. A flexible liner coated in resin is fed into the damaged section through an existing access point, so there's usually no need to dig.
  • 4We let it cure. The liner is expanded against the inside of the pipe and cured until it hardens, forming a new lining within the original pipe.
  • 5We check the finished job. Finally, we run the camera through again to make sure everything has set correctly and the pipe is clear.

Once we're finished, your drains are ready to use again, and you won't be left dealing with a torn-up garden or driveway.

How Much Does Pipe Relining Cost in Melbourne?

The pipe relining cost in Melbourne depends on the pipe itself and how much work is needed to repair it.

For example, relining a short, easily accessible section is generally more affordable than repairing a long sewer pipe with several bends or junctions.

The main things that affect the price are:

  • The length of pipe that needs relining
  • The diameter and condition of the existing pipe
  • How easy it is to access the damaged section
  • Whether tree roots or blockages need to be cleared first
  • The number of bends, connections or junctions involved

While pipe relining can cost more upfront than a simple drain repair, it can save you a considerable amount compared with digging out and replacing underground pipes.

That's especially true if the damaged section runs underneath your driveway, paving or landscaping, where excavation and reinstatement costs can quickly add up.

We'll inspect the pipe, explain your options and give you a fixed price before any work starts. There's also no call-out fee for jobs that go ahead.

Pipe Relining vs Traditional Pipe Replacement

Wondering whether it's better to reline your pipes or replace them altogether?

In most cases, it comes down to the condition of the existing pipe and where it's located.

Pipe relining is often the best option when the pipe is still suitable for repair. It's less disruptive, generally quicker and avoids the cost of digging up and restoring the surrounding area.

Traditional pipe replacement may be necessary if a pipe has completely collapsed, is severely misaligned or is too damaged to reline.

We'll always check the condition of your pipes first and talk you through which option makes the most sense.

Pipe Relining FAQs

A professionally installed pipe liner can have an expected service life of around 50 years, depending on the system used and the conditions it’s exposed to.

Pipe relining seals existing cracks and joints, making it much harder for tree roots to enter the repaired section. However, roots can still affect other damaged parts of your drainage system.

Many residential pipe relining jobs can be completed in one day. Larger or more complicated repairs may take longer, particularly if extensive cleaning is needed beforehand.

It depends on the damage. Relining is a great option when the existing pipe is suitable, particularly if excavation would mean digging up concrete, paving or gardens. If the pipe has completely collapsed, replacement may be necessary.
