  • Stop flushing. The bowl won’t clear and each flush adds another nine litres.
  • Turn off the water to the cistern. There’s a small stop tap on the wall or floor behind the pan – turn it clockwise. This stops a refill overflowing the bowl.
  • Skip the chemical drain cleaner. It rarely shifts a solid blockage, it can damage older pipework, and it makes the job hazardous for whoever clears it.
  • Check your other drains. If the shower, basin or laundry are also slow or gurgling, the problem isn’t the toilet – it’s the main line, and that needs a plumber today.

How We Fix Blocked Toilets & Sewerage Blockages

Where the blockage sits determines how it gets cleared and how urgent it is. What the toilet does when you flush is usually enough to narrow it down.

  • Water rises to the rim then drains away slowly. A partial blockage in the pan or the trap, normally paper, wipes or a build-up close to the bowl. The most common call we get, and usually the quickest to clear.
  • Water rises and doesn't drain at all. A complete blockage. Something solid is sitting in the trap or just past it. Plungers often make this worse by forcing the object further along.
  • Toilet flushes but drains slowly, and has been getting worse for weeks. A restriction further down the branch or soil pipe – grease and waste build-up, or the early stages of tree root intrusion.
  • Other fixtures gurgle when you flush. Air being pushed back through the system, which points to a blockage in the main sewer line rather than the toilet. Book this in promptly.
  • Toilet blocks, clears, then blocks again a month later. A defect in the pipe itself: a crack, a collapsed section, a misaligned joint or roots that regrow. Clearing it again without a camera inspection just resets the clock.
  • Sewage backing up into the shower or floor waste. The main line is blocked and wastewater is finding the lowest point in the house. This is an emergency – call us straight away.

What Not to Do While You Wait

Our blocked toilet plumbers spend a fair bit of time repairing damage caused by the fix rather than the blockage. A heavy-duty plunger and a bit of patience will shift a soft paper blockage. Anything beyond that is worth a professional visit before it becomes a mess you’re cleaning up.

Don’t use caustic drain cleaner

Poured onto a solid blockage it sits in the pan generating heat, which has cracked plenty of porcelain over the years, and it does real damage to older galvanised and clay pipework.

Don’t force a wire or coat hanger down the pan

You’ll scratch the glaze, and once the porcelain is scored it stains and blocks more easily from then on.

Don’t keep plunging a completely blocked toilet

Where the blockage is an object rather than paper, plunging pushes it beyond the trap and into pipework where it’s harder and more expensive to reach.

Don’t ignore water at the base of the pan

Water pooling on the floor around the toilet usually means the seal or the pan connector has failed, which is a separate repair from the blockage and one worth mentioning when you call.

Every blockage gets the same approach, whether it’s a straightforward pan clear or a collapsed sewer line.

  1. We find out where it is first. Rodding at random tells you nothing about why it happened. Where the blockage isn’t obvious, or where it’s happened before, we run a CCTV drain camera through the line and look at it.

  2. We match the tool to the blockage. An electric eel or drain auger for soft blockages and paper, high-pressure water jetting for grease, sludge and tree roots. Jetting scours the pipe wall properly instead of punching a hole through the middle of the blockage, which is why a jetted line stays clear longer.

  3. We test it under load. Clearing the obstruction isn’t the same as confirming the line flows. We run water through the system and check the fixtures on the same branch before we pack up.

  4. We tell you what we found and what it means. If the camera shows roots, a crack or a section that’s failing, you get the footage and your options, including doing nothing for now if that’s a reasonable call. What we won’t do is quote you for a pipe replacement you don’t need.

  5. We clean up. Protective sheets down, the bathroom left as we found it, and the mess out with us.

When a Blocked Toilet Is Actually a Sewer Problem

Around Melbourne's established suburbs, a lot of what gets reported as a blocked toilet turns out to be the property's sewer drain. Homes built before the 1980s were generally connected with vitrified clay pipe in short sections, and the joints between those sections are exactly where roots get in.

Once roots are established they trap paper and waste, and the toilet is usually the first fixture to show it because it carries the most solids.

Two things are worth knowing if that's what you're dealing with.

  • The pipe on your property is your responsibility. Your water corporation maintains the sewer main in the street. The drain running from your house to the connection point belongs to the property owner, so blockages and repairs on that section are yours to sort out.
  • Clearing it is not the same as fixing it. Jetting removes the roots, but they grow back through the same joint. Where the camera shows a recurring defect, the longer-term options are relining the affected section or replacing it. We'll tell you what each involves and roughly how long you'd expect to get out of a clear before it needs doing again, so you can decide whether to keep clearing it or fix it properly.

The same applies to blocked drains elsewhere on the property, and it's often why a slow-draining shower and a blocked toilet turn up in the same week.

If you're renting

In Victoria, a blocked or broken toilet system is classed as an urgent repair, so it's the rental provider's responsibility rather than the renter's. Report it to the agent or owner first. If you can't reach them and the toilet is unusable, renters are able to arrange urgent repairs directly and seek reimbursement up to a set limit. Most repeat blockages come down to what's going into the toilet, and the rest come down to the pipe.

  • Flushable wipes aren't. They don't break down like toilet paper and they're the single most common object we pull out of Melbourne toilet blockages.
  • Nothing else goes in. Sanitary products, cotton buds, dental floss, cat litter, food scraps and paper towel all cause blockages.
  • Watch the paper volume in older homes. Where the drain is old clay pipe with a shallow fall, large amounts of paper in one flush is enough to start a blockage.
  • Get recurring blockages camera-inspected. Two blockages in the same line within a year is a pipe problem, not bad luck.
  • Deal with a weak flush. A cistern that isn't delivering full volume, or an outlet valve that's partly failed, leaves waste sitting in the pan. Fixing the flush often fixes the blocking.

It depends on where the blockage is and what’s needed to reach it. A blockage in the pan or trap cleared with an auger sits at the lower end; a main sewer line needing jetting and a camera inspection is more involved; and a collapsed or root-damaged pipe is a repair rather than a clear.

Sometimes. A heavy-duty plunger with a flange, used with slow, firm strokes rather than fast ones, will shift a soft paper blockage sitting in the trap. It won’t help if the blockage is a solid object, and repeated plunging can push that object further along into pipework where it’s harder to retrieve. If two or three attempts don’t work, stop.

We’d advise against it. Caustic cleaners don’t dissolve wipes, plastic or objects, and sitting in a full pan they generate enough heat to crack porcelain. They also degrade older galvanised and clay pipework and create a genuine hazard for the plumber who then has to work in that water. Tell us if you’ve already used one so we can take precautions.

Repeat blockages in the same line almost always mean a defect in the pipe rather than a habit in the household. Tree roots regrowing through a joint, a cracked or collapsed section, a misaligned join, or a shallow fall in the drain will all keep catching waste no matter how many times the line is cleared. A camera inspection tells you which one it is, and from there you can decide between periodic clearing and a permanent repair.

Gurgling from the shower, basin or floor waste when the toilet flushes means air is being displaced back through the system, which usually points to a blockage in the main sewer line downstream of all your fixtures. It’s a sign the problem is bigger than the toilet, and it’s worth booking promptly – left alone, the next stage is often wastewater backing up through the lowest drain in the house.

Treat it as urgent if it’s your only toilet, if water is overflowing onto the floor, if sewage is coming up through other drains, or if there’s a smell of sewer gas inside.
